The National Headache Foundation Wins Award in 2008 National Health Information Awards Program

A public service campaign takes Silver Award home and honor of educating audiences about migraine

Chicago, IL – October 1, 2008 – The National Headache Foundation (NHF) was selected as a winner in the 15th annual National Health Information AwardsSM. This program recognizes the nation’s best consumer health information programs and materials.

The Achieve Migraine Relief: Play to Win - PSA received a Silver Award for the public service advertisement category. The public service campaign, funded through an educational grant from Glaxo SmithKline, featured Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Aikman speaking about his experience with migraines in hopes that other men will follow his lead and talk to their healthcare provider. The campaign stems from recent research that found approximately seven million men are migraine sufferers and men are less likely than women to see a healthcare provider about their condition.

“We are honored to be selected as a Silver Award winner from the more than 1,000 entries in the National Health Information Awards program,” said Suzanne Simons, Executive Director of the NHF. “This is wonderful recognition of NHF as the premiere educational resource in headache. Yet, our biggest reward is educating more Americans about receiving proper diagnosis and treatment to improve their quality of life.”

ABOUT MIGRAINES

Nearly 30 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches, which are most commonly experienced between the ages of 15 and 55. Seventy to eighty percent of sufferers have a family history of migraine. Seventy percent of migraine sufferers are women. Less than half of all migraine sufferers have received a diagnosis of migraine from their healthcare professional. Migraine is often misdiagnosed as sinus or tension-type headache.

Just a note of thanks to the NHF for hosting these helpful online seminars.  The recent "Fibromyalgia and Migraine" was the second Webinar I've attended, and I learned a great deal.

The Webinars are easy to log into, the presentations are professional, and the presenters do not "talk down" to their auditors. The NHF is apparently choosing subject matter experts with care, and the information is up-to-date.

Again, thank you for the hard work. I look forward to future Webinars.
