How to Talk with Your Healthcare Provider About Migraine
Prevention
Following are some simple points that you should keep in
mind when discussing migraine prevention with your healthcare
provider. Remember, good communication is a key element in
ensuring success.
|
- Be aware of all the medications you are currently taking,
for migraine or any other medical condition
- Be prepared to provide examples to explain the severity
of your attacks (eg, I sometimes miss work/school; I can't
enjoy quality time with my family; I have difficulty with
normal daily activities)
- Ask your healthcare provider to review the pros and cons
of each preventive medication, including:
- Potential negative reactions or other side effects
- Drug formulation (eg, Is it a pill? Is it an injection?)
- Dosing schedule (eg, How often will I have to take
it?)
- Make sure you understand how long you will need to take
the drug until you should begin to notice improvement
- Make sure you review
the selection criteria for migraine prevention located in
this module and be prepared to ask any questions you may
have.
